Pre-Departure Checklist

  1. Attend a general information session to learn more about the study abroad application process
  2. Schedule an appointment with a Study Abroad Advisor at least one business week prior to the application deadline
  3. Meet with an Academic Advisor to have the courses you are planning to take at the host institution approved 
  4. Obtain a valid passport if you don't already have one
  5. Receive notification of acceptance from Suffolk University
  6. Receive notification of acceptance from host university (Suffolk Madrid students will only receive one acceptance)
  7. Pay any program or housing deposits, if required
  8. Investigate your options for overseas health insurance coverage
  9. Check the visa requirements for the country where you will be studying
  10. Gather documents and apply for a student visa if you need to obtain one
  11. Complete any housing forms by the designated program deadlines
  12. Register for courses/Be registered for courses
  13. Suffolk Madrid students, register on MySuffolk at an assigned date and time
  14. All other students will be placed into placeholder courses. Do not drop these courses and do not register for courses in Boston. This will be taken care of for you.
  15. Purchase a plane ticket (only after official acceptance)
  16. Attend the Suffolk University mandatory pre-departure orientation
  17. Create an account with the U.S. Department of State STEP Program and check back for updates on our new international travel assistance provider
  18. Pick up your student visa
  19. Contact your doctor about any medical concerns, questions about vaccinations, and help with obtaining any prescriptions in advance
  20. Notify your bank and credit card companies that you will be out of the country for a period of time
  21. Start packing!
