Scholarships
There are many opportunities to fund a semester abroad, graduate studies, or post-graduate employment and research. Fellowships and scholarships are open to all students who meet eligibility requirements.
Consider applying for one of these nationally prestigious awards, which not only help with funding but will also open doors to like-minded scholars and networking. Suffolk staff and faculty can advise you during the application process to ensure that your submission is as competitive as it can be.
Ed McDonnell Scholarship
The Ed McDonnell Scholarship is a need- and merit-based awards of up to $1,500 for Suffolk students embarking on short-term and semester-long study abroad programs. The scholarships are funded by a generous gift of Sawyer Business School alumnus and entrepreneur, Ed McDonnell, a long-time advocate for and supporter of global travel at Suffolk University.
While any student may apply for a McDonnell Scholarship, award priority will be given to students attending short-term programs, and students in the Sawyer Business School studying abroad for a semester or year.
Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship
The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity. To be eligible for the Gilman Program, applicants must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship. Students can receive awards of up to $5,000.
Gilman-McCain Scholarship
The U.S. Department of State’s Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for undergraduate child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. Developed under the framework of the State Department’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, the John McCain International Scholarship for the Children of Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) is open to eligible students enrolled at accredited U.S. colleges and universities who receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid
Fund for Education Abroad
The mission of the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students who are underrepresented among the U.S. study abroad population. Preference is given to students of color, first-generation college students, community college students, and students with high financial need.
MBA Excellence Award
The MBA Excellence Fund Scholarship is a need- and merit-based awards of $800 for Suffolk MBA students required to complete a travel seminar course. The scholarships are funded by generous gifts of Sawyer Business School MBA alumni. Once selected, recipients of the MBA Excellence Fund Scholarship awards will be encouraged to attend the biannual meeting with the MBA alumni board post travel. You must submit a completed travel seminar application in order to be considered for this scholarship and meet all of the eligibility requirements to study abroad/away. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is November 15th for study away programs occurring the following spring.
Boren Scholarship
Boren Scholars and Fellows study a wide range of critical language, including Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, and Swahili. Boren Awards are available to students of all proficiency levels who are committed to enhancing their skills. Awards are determined by the duration abroad. Students spending a semester abroad can receive awards of up to $12,500.
Tortuga Scholarship
$1,000 + travel backpack
The Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship is awarded biannually to passionate students who want to explore the world. The winner of the Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship will receive $1,000 scholarship for studying abroad and a travel backpack. The scholarship may be used for tuition, room and board, books, or travel. Funds will be sent directly to the winner's study abroad program or university. In cases where this is not possible, alternative arrangements will be made.
To apply for the Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship, you must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or currently studying in the United States on a student visa, be a full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing at a four-year, degree-granting college or university in the United States, and have applied to or been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by your college or university.
First Trip Scholarship

First Trip values the philosophy of global citizenship. Many people see the world as a member of one nation or society, however, global citizens view the world through an international lens. We believe the true path to global citizenship is initiated once we immerse ourselves into another culture far different from our own. Only then are we forced to leave our comfort zones and neglect the unconscious ethnocentrism that we all possess before living abroad.
Diverse International Women of Color
The Diverse International Women Of Color Study Abroad Scholarship is intended to assist women of color who are exceptional in their studies and in need of financial assistance to study abroad. DIWC will award $500 scholarships to women of color who have been accepted to a In-Person Study Abroad Program.
beGirl.world Global Scholars
beGirl.world Global Scholars is a Philadelphia based organization that empowers teenage girls through global education and travel. We challenge girls to think beyond their neighborhood, dream bigger than their city limits, and create possibilities outside their country borders. beGirl.world Global Scholars will award two $2,000 scholarships to Black female identifying college students who have been accepted to a study abroad program.
Freeman Asia
Freeman Awards for Study in Asia is designed to support U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia for 8 weeks or longer. The program’s goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures.
U.S./Japan Bridging Scholarship
The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. The United States-Japan Bridging Foundation funds scholarships administered through AATJ to help students study abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year. Since 1999, more than 2,000 students have received Bridging Scholarships to study abroad in Japan.
Watanabe Scholarship
The Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to Japanese and American undergraduate and graduate students pursuing study abroad program or international study in either the United States or Japan. Beginning in 2016, this scholarship program has allowed Japanese students to study in the United States, and since 2019, has allowed American students to study in Japan. The scholarship will support the cost of attendance to the institution or study abroad program of the applicant’s choice and grants awards to recipients in amounts determined by financial need and other qualifications.
German Academic Exchange Service – DAAD
With more than 60,000 scholarships granted each year, DAAD claims that it is the largest academic exchange organization in the world. This service offers several scholarship programs, including one for highly qualified graduate students for study abroad, university language or summer courses, senior thesis research and/or internships in the Federal Republic of Germany. Successful applicants will receive a study grant of up to $5,000 to be used toward tuition, housing, travel, and related costs for up to one academic year in Germany.

Critical Language Scholarship
The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion group-based program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad in the summer studying one of 14 critical languages. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.
Fulbright Scholarship
This program offers students the possibility to spend an academic year in a foreign country through a study/research grant OR an English Teaching Assistantship (ETA).
Fulbright Summer Institute (U.K.)
Three-to-four week programs for US undergraduate students to explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK while experiencing higher education at a UK university. There are 9 Institutes to choose from, each hosted at a different UK institution (3-10 spots per Institute).
Fulbright Canada MITACS Globalink
The Fulbright-MITACS Globalink is intended for US Students interested in coming to Canada to undertake advanced research projects for 10 to 12 weeks (between May and August) in their area of interest. Projects will be drawn from a broad cross-section of research topics covering all academic disciplines and students will be placed with a university research project and undertake research projects under the supervision of a professor. Students will be given the opportunity to take part in professional training as well as extensive opportunity for cultural, social, and recreational experiences.
Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship
The Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship honors the legacy of the abolitionist and statesman with a fully funded summer study abroad program. this Fellowships is developed for students of color and selection is in the spirit of Douglass himself with special emphasis on leadership, social justice, agitation for positive change and cross-cultural understanding. The award covers the full cost of travel, housing, program field trips, and participation in a four-week summer study abroad course taught by CIEE. Meals and recreational activities are not covered.
